Dasai and his sister are from a small village in Guangxi Province. They are both diagnosed with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT). Unfortunately, their financial conditions do not allow them to go through regular blood transfusion and iron chelation to treat TDT. Dasai and his sister had no choice but to rely on traditional Chinese medicine to alleviate their symptoms. When16-year-old Dasai and his 22-year-old sister stood together, they were noticeably shorter than their peers and looked like 10-year-old children. Even worse, they both had an enlarged spleen, and they could not remain standing for a long time.
Dasai’s family conditions worsened in 2016 when his father passed away. Dasai’s mother had no choice but to work as a migrant worker to support the family. Dasai and his sister lived on government benefits for low-income families. Meanwhile, Dasai and his sister planted corns and wheat for their daily food supply.
Desperate days seemed to be endless for Dasai’s family. Like a beam of light shines through the cracks, representatives from Shenzhen Municipal People's Government learned of Dasai’s situation in April 2018. With the help of BGI group, Dasai and his sister started to receive regular blood transfusion and iron chelation treatment.
Fulfill the promise, every life is worth protecting
In July 2018, BGI group invited Professor Lai Yongrong’s team from The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University to examine local patients with thalassemia, including Dasai and his sister. Professor Lai’s team customized detailed treatment plan which included regular blood transfusion, regular iron chelation, and splenectomy for Dasai and his sister.

Love can be transferred. Armed with the idea to complete a community service project and inspired by Professor Lai’s story, BGI group organized as mall fundraiser to raise awareness about Dasai’s situation and needs.
Dasai and his sister are heading towards light
March 15th 2019, Dasai, at the age of 18, went out of the mountain where he had never left before to give a present to those who helped him before.
In March 16th, at the charity campaign organized by Shenzhen Project Care Foundation, BGI group and Guang Foundation, Dasai and his sister presented a thank-you pennant to show how much they appreciated the help and kindness they have received from BGI group and all other organizations.
June 2019, Dasai and his sister completed splenectomy. Their operations were successful. Dasai and his sister will recover soon. “When we are cured, we want to live and work like normal people, and our mother can finally take a break. In the future, we want to help others like the way we were helped”, said Dasai. We have full faith in Dasai.
